Today’s Word on Benzodiazepines

Valium, Xanax, Librium, Ativan, and Klonopin have become as common as over the counter household aspirin, and are all too often prescribed for more than 90 days by doctors who either want you coming back (money money money $$$) to renew your Rx each month, OR, because they are simply uneducated and ignorant in addiction and too apathetic to do their due diligence in research. My close friend, who is a retired family practitioner, told me he received 1.5 hours of addiction training in med school… that’s less than I received as a nurse!

It is now known that at even one pill per day, over time, there is brain damage, causing brain atrophy, just to mention one little tidbit. This causes brain fog, memory loss, increased anxiety, depression, and many other horrific cognitive deficits. “French researchers surveyed 4,425 long-term benzodiazepine users and found that 75 percent were ‘markedly ill to extremely ill . . . a great majority of the patients had significant symptomatology, in particular major depressive episodes and generalized anxiety disorder, often with marked severity and disability” Add to this, ataxia (uncoordinated movement, due to neurological dysfunction), and fatigue. Don’t bother seeing your doctor about these symptoms because it’s a side effect and consequence of drugging yourself. Yes, you may have started by being an ‘accidental addict’; however, if you now know you’re an accidental addict and you continue in your addiction, you have graduated to being a purposeful addict and drug abuser.  Your doctor won’t rescue you… you need to rescue yourself and get clean!

Withdrawal from Benzodiazepines (which is why you NEVER detox yourself) consists of, but not limited to, the following symptoms: anxiety, agitation, muscle pain and weakness, muscle spasms, irritability, panic, confusion, paranaoid delusions, hallucinations and psychosis. These withdrawal symptoms can persist for up to several weeks… even months… sometimes years.  REMEMBER: BENZO WITHDRAWAL IS NOT LIMITED TO STOPPING OR LOWERING  YOUR DOSE; BENZO WITHDRAWAL CAN HAVE AN ONSET DUE TO YOUR BODY’S TOLERATION AND ‘NEEDING’ MORE, LEADING TO OVERDOSE.

According to JAMA, the largest age group being prescribed Benzodiazepines are between 65 and 80 and for more women than men. In 2012, Medicare’s massive prescription drug program didn’t spend a penny on popular tranquilizers such as Valium, Xanax and Ativan. The following year, it doled out more than $377 million for the drugs. Hmmmmm!

Of course, one must dig hard for the truth because Big Pharma and Big Med do NOT want you knowing this, and much is buried from the public eye. I mean, how would it look? So, if you suffer from CRS (Can’t Remember S%&T) look to that pill(s) you’re popping. We must deal with life in a constructive and productive way – without numbing and dumbing – or suffer the consequences. People… either get superivisonal medical detox or quit complaining! Your answers are in your medicine cabinet.

I’m not sorry I was rough on you, but you need to hear this!  It’s your life and soul that needs to be rescued from the egregious acts of unscrupulous doctors.  Tough love goes a long way.
